Becoming a Beer Sommelier

Brew-School's Beer Sommelier Course has been developed in conjunction with some of the UK's leading beer sommeliers to give a one day course that enables you or your staff to understand and feel confident of the following aspects of beer service and appreciation:

• Beer Flavour Appreciation techniques
• Beer ingredients and their impact on style and flavour
• Brewing techniques - impacts on flavours
• Comparative tasting of 12 different styles of beer
• Guidlines for beer and food matching and tastings
• Beer Sommelier exam - 40 questions (multiple choice)
• Being able to recognise and identify the causes of off flavours in beer

Following the successful completion of the course candidates will be awarded the Beer Sommelier Qualification along with either a pass, merit or distinction award.

Elements of Beer Sommelier Training

The elements of the Brew-School Beer Sommelier Course comprise as follows:

• Keeping and Serving Beer (25%)
• Beer Styles (25%)
• Beer Flavor and Evaluation (25%)
• Beer Ingredients and Brewing Processes (15%)
• Pairing Beer with Food (10%)

This course is ideal for anybody who works in the brewing and hospitality industry, or with an interest in beer flavours and wants to talk knowledgeably and confidently about beer and is looking at developing their beer sommelier skills.

Beer Sommelier Course contents

 The course includes:

A number of small beer tastings during the day

Samples of food to demonstrate the matching of beer styles

Lunch and refreshments throughout the day

Full Brew-School course notes relating to the beer tasting and matching course

A course assessment by a Master Brewer and Beer Sommelier

A certificate to indicate those who have reached the required level of knowledge in relation to the Beer Sommelier Award
